Just “cooked” up a batch of stove top potpourri and it’s simmering nicely on the back burner as I type. Suddenly my home feels a lot more Christmas-y! It’s amazing how powerful SCENTS are in triggering memories and emotions. The hubster came into the kitchen and commented on the wonderful aroma and I swear, he was immediately in a better mood! hehe. (Not that he was GRUMPY this morning or anything! ha!)
And as good as it SMELLS…it LOOKS good enough to EAT! But I wouldn’t suggest it. I would imagine the cinnamon sticks might get caught between your teeth and the orange peels might be a bit on the chewy side. :-)
My thanks to Call at Make It Do for posting this magical brew. I basically followed her “recipe”, but as I tend to do, I doubled everything! lol. It’s my addict mentality I’m afraid. ONE orange is good?? Then FOUR must be REALLY good! 1/2 cup cranberries?? What’s up with that?? I dumped in half the bag. Then I liked the pretty red color so much….I dumped in the rest of it! 3 sticks of cinnamon??? What am I going to do with the other 4 or 5 I have?? Well, put them in of course! I think you get the idea. I now have a huge pot of this stuff on the stove and it smells and looks divine! I AM however going to share it with my son and his new wifey so their home can smell good too. I may have an addicts’ mentality…but I’m generous. :-)
So here is my little photo montage of this morning’s thoroughly enjoyable project!
Holiday Stove Top Potpourri Mix

one whole orange or just the orange peel
1/2 cup cranberries
1 Tbsp. whole cloves
3 sticks of cinnamon or a small handful of small pieces of cinnamon
a bit of grated nutmeg if desired
Quarter the orange. Put all the ingredients into a saucepan. Fill pan with water. Place on the stove on the smallest burner, on the lowest setting. Refill water as needed.
And that’s today’s….

so can you freeze and reuse?
So, this isn’t like regular potporri? It’s only for the stove?
I put a pot of “stuff” on my wood burning stove. The stuff changes depending on what I have. And if we are all sick i use that vicks vapor stuff, the smell follows the heat through the house so everyone benefits at once.

where did you find your larget package of cinn. sticks?
If you wanted to make up in jar as gifts would you add the water and seal?
Does the cranberry really add to the smell or is that there just to make it look pretty?
I do this only I use apples. Makes the best autumn smell ever!!
I enjoy the fragrances of the items you are using in this potpourri. I’ve been using something like this for years. The only suggestion I have is to put it in your coffee pot carafe…. let the coffee maker drip (without coffee, of course). Make a full pot with the simmering potpourri ingredients in the carafe. This will keep the potpourri warm and fragrant for many hours in your home. This way, you don’t have to worry about your stove being on unattended. The water evaporates at a slower rate than when simmering on a stovetop.
Fills my home with the most wonderful holiday fragrance.
