While I enjoy hosting backyard barbecues, New Year’s Eve parties, Christmas parties, and other get-togethers, the role of host can be stressful. It’s easy to get lost in the details or lose track of time if you don’t have a plan for the day of the event, but I recently learned about a simple hosting hack called the “3-hour rule” that can help hosts prepare for guests in a realistic timeframe.
Different types of people struggle with different aspects of hosting, but the 3-hour rule can be a useful tool for anyone. Whether you’re more likely to run around in a last-minute panic or spend the whole day on less-than-necessary tasks, this hosting tip can help!
Jillee’s Take:
What Is The 3-Hour Rule?
When you host a party or get-together, aim to begin preparing and setting up 3 hours before guests arrive. The idea is to give yourself plenty of time to set up, handle last-minute issues, and get dressed without letting stress or anxiety get the better of you.
The Benefits Of Following The 3-Hour Rule
It may seem simple, but having that 3-hour block set aside in mind makes a huge difference in how I approach hosting. Knowing that I want to give myself an hour to shower and get ready, I can look at the remaining 2 hours of prep time and prioritize the tasks that are actually important.
Even if I realize I need to, say, make a last-minute run to the grocery store for napkins, I have the time to do it because I’m not bogged down by cleaning the baseboards (or any of the other low-priority tasks I would normally sidetrack myself with).
I love hosting, spending time with family during the holidays, and making memories. Try preparing for your next party or gathering by following the 3-hour rule — I know you’ll agree it’s a game-changer! With a clear plan in mind, you can spend less time stressing and more time making memories with the people you love.
What’s your best hosting tip?
I learned this from an older friend, get dressed first then get ready for your guests!

The last hour is for any “Murphy’s Law” inevitabilities like the dog eating the entire platter of appetizers you just put out. THEN you are at least dressed when PLAN B commences.
